Fall Into Movement: Why Your Body Feels Different When the Seasons Change

September brings cooler temperatures, busy schedules and a return to familiar routines. It can also bring something else: more stiffness, aches and pains.

Maybe your back feels tighter after sitting at your desk, your knees are a little stiffer in the morning, or an old injury has started making itself known again.

So, why does your body sometimes feel different when the seasons change?

Cooler weather and stiffness

While weather doesn’t directly cause most joint or muscle problems, cooler temperatures can make some people feel stiffer or more uncomfortable—particularly first thing in the morning or after sitting for a while.

The solution doesn’t have to be complicated. Movement helps. A short walk, some gentle mobility exercises or simply taking regular breaks from sitting can help keep your body moving comfortably.

Your routine may be changing too

Fall often means getting back to work, school, sports and regular exercise.

If you’ve been less active over the summer, jumping straight back into your previous routine can be a lot for your body to handle. This is especially true for runners and recreational athletes returning to organized sports.

Instead, start where you are—not where you were.

Gradually increase your activity, give yourself time to adapt and don’t underestimate the importance of recovery.

What can you do to feel your best this fall?

A few simple habits can go a long way:

Move regularly. Avoid staying in one position for long periods.

Warm up. Give your body a few minutes to prepare before exercise or sport.

Build strength. Strong muscles help support your joints and make everyday activities easier.

Increase activity gradually. Don’t try to make up for months of missed workouts in one week!

Listen to your body. Some soreness is normal when trying something new, but persistent or worsening pain deserves attention.

When should you get assessed?

You don’t have to wait until you’re in significant pain before seeking help.

Consider seeing a physiotherapist if pain or stiffness is affecting your daily activities, an old injury keeps returning, you’re having trouble getting back to exercise, or you’re simply unsure about how to safely increase your activity.

Depending on your needs, physiotherapy, massage therapy, chiropractic care, athletic therapy or exercise-based care may all play a role in helping you move better. https://healthwisephysio.ca/healthwise-physiotherapy-services/
